Clara Fish Derby 2014
Plenty of empty parking
spaces greeted parents accompanying their children to the Fish Derby arranged
at the Santa Clara Civic Center Plaza on Saturday, May 3. The fishing contest is an annual feature of
the recreation activities arranged by the City of Santa Clara. This year the derby was a flop. All 1,250 rainbow
trout received by the City died of asphyxia the night before the derby when the
fish were put in recycled water saturated with nitrogen, a volunteer present at
the venue explained to the arriving parents.

Saturday, May 3
On Saturday, May 3,
children ages 3-11 can try their luck at fishing at the annual
Fish Derby. This free
event will be held from 6:00-11:00 am at the Santa Clara
Civic Center Plaza,
near El Camino Real and Lincoln Avenue. The reflection pool will
be transformed into a
fishing pond filled with active, healthy trout for the children
to catch. Rods and bait
will be provided. The Santa Clara Parks & Recreation
Department sponsors
this event, with support from a variety of local community
