How to get new registration plates in Karachi

1.   Fill out the online information at the Excise Department web site and make an online payment.

2.   Get a print out of the receipt.

3. Either wait for the text message that the plates are ready or just go to their office after a wait of three months

4. After a period of three months or on getting notification from the Excise department go go to the Civic Center, Hasan Square Karachi. [Street parking is available on the south side of the building]

Go there with the file containing the original documents of the car, the copy of the payment receipt (challan) and a copy of the ID card of the car owner. 

If you have received a text message from the Excise department, your plates are ready--take out the old plates and take them with you to the Excise department. 

Do not drive the car without the registration plate.

There are people available to take out the old number plates, put holes in the new number plates, and install the new plates. For each of these tasks the regular charge is Rs. 100.

5. Go to the fourth floor to reach the Excise department.

6. Stand in line with the copy of the receipt and a copy of the ID card.  On the ID card write down the registration number of the car, your telephone number, and any reference number received via text message.

7. The copy of the receipt and the ID card will be collected bye an officer.

8. Once the copies of the challan and the ID card are accepted; you will have to wait for about 30 minutes to an hour. If you do not have your car plates with you, go down and get the plates out of the vehicle.

If you are a woman or a senior citizen you can be allowed to go and sit inside.

9. Once your name is called, go to the desk where your name is called, give them the old number plates, and the file of the vehicle; new number plates will be given to you and the file will be stamped.
