Dead Fish Upend Santa Clara Fish Derby 2014

Dead Fish Upend Santa Clara Fish Derby 2014
Plenty of empty parking spaces greeted parents accompanying their children to the Fish Derby arranged at the Santa Clara Civic Center Plaza on Saturday, May 3.  The fishing contest is an annual feature of the recreation activities arranged by the City of Santa Clara.  This year the derby was a flop. All 1,250 rainbow trout received by the City died of asphyxia the night before the derby when the fish were put in recycled water saturated with nitrogen, a volunteer present at the venue explained to the arriving parents.
Fish Derby was announced through the City of Santa Clara Recreation Activities Guide Winter/Spring 2014.  The text is being reproduced below.
Civic Center Plaza
Saturday, May 3
On Saturday, May 3, children ages 3-11 can try their luck at fishing at the annual
Fish Derby. This free event will be held from 6:00-11:00 am at the Santa Clara
Civic Center Plaza, near El Camino Real and Lincoln Avenue. The reflection pool will
be transformed into a fishing pond filled with active, healthy trout for the children
to catch. Rods and bait will be provided. The Santa Clara Parks & Recreation
Department sponsors this event, with support from a variety of local community
groups. Call (408) 615-2260 for more information.
